Explora Books has released lyric videos for Geoffrey Bott’s memoir, Uphill: An Inspirational Story of Suffering, Greed, Carnage, Immense Courage and Gut-determination. Available now on YouTube, the soundtracks serve as a musical companion to the book, reflecting themes of perseverance, endurance, and hope drawn from Bott’s life experiences.
The lyric videos “Uphill” and “You Know I Will” capture the defining spirit of Bott’s story: a man who began with nothing but hope, faced steep climbs without certainty, and refused to surrender to hardship. The songs trace his journey through physical injury, legal struggles, personal loss, and emotional distress, framing each obstacle as part of a long struggle toward recovery and self-understanding. With a determination that endures every setback, the songs build toward a message of hard-earned hope, presenting Bott’s experience as a journey from despair to renewal.

Uphill began as a personal writing exercise intended to process trauma and difficult experiences, but gradually evolved into a memoir about endurance through prolonged adversity. At the center of the book is a catastrophic knee injury Bott sustained in his teens, which led to thirteen surgeries, extended rehabilitation, addiction to narcotic pain medication, and years of physical therapy. In 2004, surgeons informed him that his left knee had permanently deteriorated and that he would never ride a bicycle again.
That same month, Bott bought a bicycle.
What followed became one of the memoir’s defining chapters. Against medical expectations, Bott trained for and completed California’s Death Ride — a 129-mile cycling event across five mountain passes and more than 15,000 feet of elevation gain through the Sierra Nevada. The achievement marked a turning point in Bott’s long physical recovery and became a personal symbol of persistence in the face of limitation.
Yet Uphill extends far beyond physical recovery. Bott also reflects on divorce, prolonged legal conflict, financial instability, the loss of his home and business assets, and the challenges of rebuilding his life while raising a son and a daughter. Rather than presenting himself as invulnerable, Bott writes openly about failure, grief, poor decisions, and emotional exhaustion. This candor gives the memoir much of its emotional force, allowing the story to resonate less as a conventional triumph narrative and more as an account of survival shaped by uncertainty, struggle, and gradual resilience.
Through the lyric videos and the memoir itself, Uphill presents a deeply personal account of confronting physical suffering, emotional distress, and the difficult process of rebuilding meaning after loss.
The official lyric videos, “Uphill” and “You Know I Will,” are now streaming on YouTube. Geoffrey Bott’s Uphill: An Inspirational Story of Suffering, Greed, Carnage, Immense Courage and Gut-determination can be purchased on Amazon and other major digital bookstores.
